Digital Twinning with Ansible and cloud-init to Support Destructive Infrastructure Testing - James Freeman, A24.io
Feedback form is now closed.
Cloud infrastructure frameworks such as OpenStack and OpenShift have grown massively in popularity over recent years, but with these large, distributed environments comes a brand new challenge - how to test them, especially when such testing might be disruptive or even destructive. Fortunately open source frameworks such as Ansible and cloud-init make make it easy to deploy our infrastructure as code, and with a little care we can reuse the same code to create a "digital twin" of our entire infrastructure on a single powerful workstation. When coulped with virtual switches such as Cumulus VX and a visual tool such as GNS3, we can rapidly build an entire replica of our infrastructure in a sandbox; a "digital twin". Using such a powerful technique we can test our deployment code, and can even perform aggressive and even destructive testing such as denial of service attacks, penetration testing. We can simulate the loss of entire parts of the infrastructure such as core switches or storage nodes. This can then support us in the development of business continuity plans, evaluate our backup and most importantly our recovery procedures, all without impacting production infrastructure!
